K A T H Y R O S E

 Kathy Rose’s work has evolved from her early drawn animated films of the  1970’s,  through her unique, pioneering performance work combining  dance with film in the 1980-90’s, to her current surreal performance  video spectacles and installations, with influence from symbolist art  and the Japanese Noh theater. 

Rose received a Guggenheim  Fellowship in Performance Art in 2003, and in 2005 was awarded a New  York State Council on the Arts grant in Video (Media & New  Technology).

Rose has toured extensively in live performance  throughout the United States and Europe, giving performances at the  Museum of Modern Art’s Cineprobe series, Kennedy Center,  Serious Fun at Lincoln Center, Fondation Cartier pour l’art  Contemporain, the Walker Art Center,The Kitchen, Institute of  Contemporary Art in London, Hirschorn Museum/Washington, Danspace-St.  Marks Church, Baltimore Art Museum, Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon,  Akademie die Kunst in Berlin, Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, etc.  as well as performances in Geneva, Helsinki, Amsterdam, Bern, Zurich,  Hiroshima, etc.  Her video installation works have been exhibited at the  Victoria & Albert Museum,  Aldrich Museum,  Cooper Union, etc.

Rose  has received 6 grants from the National Endowment for the Arts,  4  grants from the New York State Council for the Arts, 3 grants from the  New York Foundation for the Arts, as well as grants from Harvestworks  Digital, the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation, American Film Institute,  Tree of Life Foundation, Finishing Funds/Experimental Video Center.   Preceding grants were given in categories including  Film, Dance,  Choregraphy, Interarts, Video. She is a Distinguished Alumni of the  California Institute of the Arts.

Rose’s recent videos  have shown in numerous festivals including Dance on Camera at Lincoln  Center, IL COREOGRAFO ELETTRONICO/Naples, DANCE CAMERA WEST Los Angeles,  Pompidou Center in "A Shaded View of Fashion" Film Festival, Fashion  Film Festival Milano, BUDAPEST AUTUMN FESTIVAL, AMERICAN DANCE FESTIVAL,  MONTAGE VIDEO DANCE /Johannesburg, MOTION PICTURES Dance Film/Video  Festival Philadelphia, INVIDEO  Milan, NEW MOVES INTERNATIONAL/Glasgow,  FRAME International Dance-Video Festival/Lisbon, Dance Without  Shadow/Lisbon, International Video Dance Festival - Le Breuil, France,  Sao Carlos Videodance Festival, Topanga Film Festival, Sans Souci Dance  Video Festival, Artechmedia/Canary Islands, It’s LIQUID International Art Show in Venice at the Palazzo Flangini, etc.

Her most recent performance "Opera of the Interior" premiered in ANIMATOR 2015 in Poznan, Poland.

Kathy  Rose has long been inspired by Japanese art and theater, including the  work of Yoji Kuri, Kihichiro Kawamoto, Akira Kurasawa, as well as Butoh  dance, the Japanese Noh, and Bunraku theaters. Rose is also an admirer  of Fellini's work, and artists such as Hannah Hoch, and Remedios Varo.

Rose is a Master Lecturer in the Media Arts Department at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Her courses include Image and Performance (an interdisciplinary workshop in which students make their own  performance art works using costume, video, audio, etc.), Dance and  Media, Japanese Media and Installation, The Supernatural in Asian  Art and Performance, Performance for Freshman Core,  Autobiographical  Art  in the Fine Arts Department, and  in the Pre-College Program, along with Art and Performance.  Rose also has currently taught Multimedia Performance at Drexel University.
